Canadian Church Music Studio Creates Connections for Young Artists

[The Anglican (Diocese of Toronto, Anglican Church of Canada)] A project that took shape in Grace Church, Markham, Ontario, during the pandemic is helping to bond within the religious community and beyond. Parkway Studio, a music studio housed in the church building, has become a space for young people to belong and a place for Markham musicians to rehearse locally.

The idea started when Aaron Dumpala, Grace’s musical director, identified a need in Markham that he believed the ward could meet. “I realized it was a little strange that there was such a big music community in Markham and Stouffville, but we still have to gravitate to Toronto for the rehearsal studios,” he says. “I was like, ‘We have some space at the church, so why don’t we create a center where the musicians can meet? “”

He also hoped to find a way for the young people to use their creative talents in the church. “I saw a bit of a disconnect with the younger population,” he says. “As much as I love my community, I saw this huge intergenerational gap as much. “
