The Magnolia Civic Center has announced a summer concert scheduled for Saturday, August 28 at 7:00 p.m. Brennan Villines Quartet presents The Jazz Age: Popular Music Through the Decades with a Jazz Twist. The Jazz Age is a one-of-a-kind show featuring early jazz favorites and modern pop songs with a jazz twist. From Cole Porter to Britney Spears, Beatles to Drake – from baby boomers to Zoomers, this is music everyone will enjoy.
From a small town in western Kentucky, Brennan left home to attend the University of Memphis on a full music scholarship. A classically trained pianist, he didn’t always think of himself as a singer – far from it, in fact – but in college, something started to change. He formed the Brennan Villines Trio. He found jazz, found musician friends, found collaborations and challenges. He found himself on stage, in the classroom and perhaps most importantly in the living room of an old mansion-turned-bar in the Victorian village where he began a weekday residency.
“Where I grew up, there was no jazz jam,” Brennan says. “There was no place I could just go and play – there was no one to teach me, other than classical piano or maybe pop. It was musical theater or church music You’re trying to find a soul to this, in a Baptist church So in college this opportunity came up at the Mollie Fontaine salon and I just loved it That’s when I really started to come into my voice. I’ve always loved jazz and soul, and that’s where I started to develop the tone and chops I have today. It’s long been a staple of Memphis music community.
Villines appeared on FOX’s singing competition The Four in 2018, which featured Sean “Diddy” Combs, Meghan Trainor and DJ Khaled and caused a stir with his cover of 500 Miles by The Proclaimers.
According to Emily Draffen, director of the Magnolia Civic Center, “We look forward to welcoming this versatile and talented performer to New Albany. He has created this special jazz revue for theaters like ours.”
