The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide Friday night in Bogue Chitto.

At around 5:30 p.m. Friday, the dispatcher received a call about a shooting at a residence on Mill Creek Road, according to Deputy Chief Johnny Hall.

Summit resident La’Curtis Hacket, 22, and two others were in a music studio at the residence when two assailants kicked the door and shot Hackett multiple times. Hackett was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

One of the gunmen was described as a black man, Sheriff Steve Rushing said.

One person is in custody, Hall said Sunday afternoon, and they hope to have a second person in custody soon.

Three weeks ago, a Pike County grand jury declined to indict Hackett in the 2020 shooting death of Austin Wanzo. Wanzo, 20, also of Summit, was shot in the back with a gun Springfield XD .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun near the intersection of Summit Street and Higgins Drive in McComb.

Hackett said he accidentally shot Wanzo while they were sitting in another man’s car.

According to The Enterprise-Journal, Police Chief Garland Ward said at the time that Hackett was charged with murder because the handgun had a system of four internal safeties that would not allow him to misfire. Hackett was arraigned in June for manslaughter, which was turned into murder in July.

Sheriff Rushing said a motive is not currently known.

“We are still investigating at this time,” Hall said. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”
