Sony Music Entertainment signs cross-platform media deal with Jason Owen’s Sandbox Entertainment


Jason Owen, President and CEO of Sandbox Entertainment, and Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division (SME) have signed a development agreement to produce a slate of long-form original projects across multiple platforms and distributors.

As part of the multi-year agreement, Sandbox Productions and SME will collaborate on the creation, production and distribution of scripted and unscripted content across television, film and digital formats, including the development of a documentary film June Carter Cash.

Owen is co-president of Monument Records (an imprint of Sony Music Entertainment).

Prior to launching Sandbox Entertainment in 2010, he also served as Senior Vice President of Artist Development and Marketing for Universal Music Group Nashville and Senior Director of Marketing and Talent Relations at Columbia TriStar Television.

Sony teamed up with Owen and producer/writer Shane McAnally to launch Nashville-based Monument in 2017.

With access to the Cash Estate, including “never before heard of” interviews with Cash family members and archival footage, June Carter’s film will trace June Carter’s roots and musical journey, say Sandbox Productions and SME .

The companies also teamed up for the first of LOVE, TOMa film narrated by Grammy, Oscar and Golden Globe nominated songwriter Tom Douglas.

Sandbox’s partnership with SME will allow it to consult and collaborate with a network of writers, directors, on-screen talent, musical artists and visual artists to provide creative direction on other new projects. and in development, say Sandbox Productions and SME.

SME’s Premium Content division will distribute and finance all joint venture projects.

In November 2021, SME signed a deal with Snapchat to include music from major record label artists in the app’s licensed music library.

This follows SME’s partnership with Roblox, valued at $45 billion, which signed a strategic partnership with the company in July.The music industry around the world
