Development of general education
In person. For those who have already registered, Samuels Public Library is proud to host Lord Fairfax Community College’s General Education Development Course. This course is all Tuesday & Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (excluding school holidays or closures) and is completely free. Let this course be the springboard to your success. In person. Join us Saturday May 7 for our one-day Samicon event, which this year also falls on Free Comic Book Day! Stop by the library after the family fun day for free comics and video game themed fun, including a Ninja Code coding workshop, all-day escape challenges, magic shows from local magician Kevin Owens, Pokémon-themed cookie decorating, arcade machines, video games, Minecraft, raffles, and more. Show up in costume and have your photo taken for a chance to win our costume contest. Level up with your library card and join us for Samicon in May!
Virtual. Do you consider yourself a hopeless romantic? Are bad romances a guilty pleasure for you? Can you quote every line from your favorite romantic comedy? So you should join us Monday, May 9 at 6:00 p.m. for another Bad Romance reunion special. Treat us to your favorite love books, movies, music or other media, and possibly discover new titles!
Hybrid, Virtual and In-Person. Interested in your family history? Have you done extensive research and want to be able to share your findings? Join our virtual genealogy club where novices and experts can meet and discuss different genealogy topics. This event will take place on Wednesday, May 11 at 6:00 p.m.
Hike and Backpack in the Shenandoah Valley Series
In person. Interested in combining hiking with camping? Come and discover the world of backpacking! Join us Thursday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m. as we review the following topics: how to physically prepare for a backpacking trip; how to plan a backpacking trip; gear selection; what to wear; food options; review of wilderness skills and principles of Leave No Trip. Participants will receive a sample packing list and other hiking resources. Susan Tschirhart is a self-described hiker, camper and “nature enthusiast”. She is currently Chair of the Front Royal-Warren County Appalachian Trail Community Committee; as a scout leader and as a guide for The Trail Tribe, a local women’s hiking and hiking group. Recently, she started the outdoor experiences company, Next Bend Adventures, to lead and host hikes, night hikes and other outdoor adventure experiences in the Shenandoah Valley. Her favorite pastime is spending time with her three young adult sons. They were instrumental in how she earned her track name “Goldilocks” and the “Three Bears”. Good road!

Samuels Public Library, CCAP and Wednesday Group are set to host the first Warren County Volunteer Fair on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Check out some of the great volunteer opportunities involving fundraisers, programs, and service with nonprofit organizations in Warren County. Participating organizations include Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army and the Warren Coalition. Photography and beyond: oceans of possibilities
Virtual. Join us Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. for this virtual photography exchange to discuss pushing the creative boundaries of our photography. All types of cameras and all levels of photographers are welcome. This interactive forum is moderated by local photographer, Sharon Fisher. This meeting will take place virtually on Monday, May 16 at 6:00 p.m. This group meets every 3rd Monday and Wednesday of the month.

For the month of May, we will discuss The sixth extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert. This meeting will take place in person on Wednesday, May 18 at 10 a.m. This group meets every 3rd Monday and Wednesday of the month. The morning discussion is now in person at the library.
In person. If you like puzzles and like our library, put the pieces together with us for our fundraising puzzle contest on Saturday May 21 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Compete in teams of two in the 300 Piece Puzzle event, or compete in teams of four in the more difficult 500 Piece Puzzle event. Refreshments served, prizes awarded. The registration fee for an individual is $20, for a team of two, $30 and for a team of four, $40. 100% of your admission fee is a donation to the Samuels Public Library. Closure of the library
Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the library will be closed Monday May 30. The library will resume normal opening hours on Tuesday, May 31.
