An Edmonton music production studio is up for three Juno Awards this year.
Velvet has a work nominated for pop album of the year with the artist JESSIAContemporary Aboriginal Artist or Group of the Year with Shawnee Kishand Adult Contemporary Album of the Year with Tafari Anthony.
“It’s pretty exciting,” producer Brandon Unis told Global News on Thursday.
“We like to joke: still no wins, but we keep our fingers crossed for this year.”
Collectively, the Velveteen team has 13 Juno nominations and multiple Edmonton Music Awards.
Edmonton musicians get 2020 Juno nominations
Unis got its start in the industry working in Toronto before moving to Edmonton five years ago.
“I really didn’t know what to expect. I couldn’t have been more shocked and pleasantly surprised.
“The sheer number of artists that are here are all so amazing. I don’t know if it’s because we have such long, cold winters and everyone squats down and learns an instrument or what it is. is, but the scene is full of tons of talented artists, songwriters and producers. We are so busy as producers because there are so many artists with great songs that need to be created.
“I’m more satisfied with my creativity than I’ve ever been, which I didn’t expect.”

Juno nods are incredibly validating, Unis said.
“It’s voted for by your peers so even to have a nomination I can’t really describe how proud we are because it means people we look up to heard it and voted for it and also voted for it. believed.

“I feel like a lot of us have impostor syndrome. We still can’t believe we can do this every day…and we’re students of it and constantly trying to improve. and watch what other people are doing, be competitive and do the songs justice.
“I think a win, for me, would be a good benchmark for us to do it on a competitive level, really bringing something to the table and that’s well received because that’s ultimately what matters: that the people hear the songs and connect with them.”

“The more eyes we can have on Edmonton, the less it can be denied as a musical powerhouse.

“I’ll be honest, before I lived here, when I thought of music hubs, Edmonton didn’t even come to mind and now I can’t imagine not making music here.”
The 2022 Juno Awards will take place May 14-15. The televised portion will take place on Sunday, May 15 from Toronto.

Kish’s nod is for his self-titled album. His latest album is called Mr. Tie.
“She kind of popped up on our radar and we reached out,” Unis said. “We said, ‘We have to work with you. You are amazing. In a perfect world, you could make any record, what would it be?
“And what she described was kind of like this retro, soulful, R&B, kind of Motown-y, kind of British-inspired like Buffy and Amy Winehouse. So old school meets new school.

It was a very important experience for the Velveteen team, Unis said, and they are all very invested.
“We’re very connected to that because we sat at a piano and wrote songs from scratch and saw them all the way through. It’s always really special when you can get involved.
“I vividly remember sitting at the piano and asking him, ‘What are your goals? What do you want to do as an artist? One of them was to produce a complete record that is her exact vision that she could be proud of, and a Juno nomination and hopefully a win,” Unis said.
Nuela Charles, singer and Juno nominee
Velveteen credits Nuela Charles with bringing more attention to the Edmonton music scene.
Anthony, another nominated artist, had the Velveteen team do the mixing and some of the production.
“The songs come with all their layers,” Unis explained. “You go through each layer, you find the good and the bad – sonically – and make them work together. Then you take them from individual stems and turn them into a song.
The Toronto-based artist mixes pop, soul and alternative and is known for his sultry songs.
Her Juno nod for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year comes from her latest EP The way you see me.
First-time nominee JESSIA is up for TikTok Juno Fan Choice.
The Vancouver pop singer is also nominated for Single of the Year, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year.
Her first single I am not pretty exploded on TikTok, racking up millions of views in one day.
